- ZFW Zero Fuel Weight. Actual weight of the fully equipped aircraft including crew, traffic load and, if applicable, ballast fuel.

- Width A measurement or extent of something from side to side; the lesser of two or the least of three dimensions of a body.
- Weight A measurement of the heaviness of a person or thing.
- Voucher A document that entitles the holder to a discount or that may be exchanged for goods or services.
- Volume The space that a entity or object occupies.
- Visa An official entry in a Passport or other Travel Document made by an official of a government to indicate that the bearer has been granted authority to enter or re-enter the country or region concerned.
- Vehicle A means of conveyance, usually with wheels, for transporting people or goods, primarily on roads.
- Valuation Charge A charge for carriage of baggage, based on the declared value for carriage of such baggage.
- Validation The authorized stamping or writing upon the Passenger Ticket evidencing that it has been officially issued by the carrier. Acceptance of an electronic ticket by the intended validating carrier of the ticket constitutes validation.
- Validating Carrier The issuing airline whose numeric airline code precedes the document number.

- Upgrade Change from the original fare paid to a higher fare (changes of seasonality, day of week, applicable related charges, resulting in a higher fare do not constitute upgrading). (note: Reso 012 currently calls this “Upgrading“)
- Universal Time Coordinated The international standard of time. For non-technical purposes such as specifying time zones, UTC is the same as Greenwich Mean Time.
- Unit Origin The initial starting point of a pricing unit.
- Unit Load Device A load carrying device which interfaces directly with aircraft loading and restraint systems and meets all restraint requirements without the use of supplementary equipment. As such, it becomes a component part of the aircraft. The device can be either a combination of components or one complete structural unit. A combination unit is an aircraft pallet plus net plus nonstructural igloo, or pallet plus net. A structural unit is a lower deck or a main deck cargo container, or a structural igloo assembly.
- Unit Destination The ultimate stopping place of a pricing unit.
- Unchecked Baggage Baggage of which the passenger retains custody.
- Unaccompanied When used for children and infant fares, this shall mean the child/infant is not accompanied by an adult.

- ULD Type Grouping of Unit Load Devices (ULD’s) with the same dimension, weights and limitations. Is identified by ULD Type Code (e.g. AKE, PAG, etc.) and optional owner and/or serial number or range of serial numbers.
- ULD Load Position A subdivision of a containerized/palletized compartment.
- ULD Compatibility Permission to load a ULD (ULD type) on a specific hold location (bay or pallet position) with possible weight limitation.
- ULD A load carrying device which interfaces directly with aircraft loading and restraint systems and meets all restraint requirements without the use of supplementary equipment. Examples include containers, pallets and pallet nets.
- TXW Taxi Weight. Actual weight including taxi and take-off fuel of an aircraft prior to take-off. It is calculated by adding zero fuel weight, taxi fuel and take-off fuel.
- Turnaround The station in an aircraft rotation, where the flight number changes.
- Trip The flight(s) that form the total route of a specific origin and destination. A single trip can be served by one or multiple carriers.
- Travel Product A travel item which may be purchased by a customer.
- Travel Agency A private retailer or public service individual that provides travel and tourism related services to the public on behalf of suppliers such as activities, airlines, car rentals, cruise lines, hotels, railways, travel insurance, and package tours.
- Travel The passenger routing identified by ticketed points and not the aircraft routing

- Transport Vehicle A thing used for transporting people or goods.
- Transport Schedule Information about events that involves a change in the position or location of objects of interest to transportation industry.
- Transport Permission The action of authorizing, or fact of being authorized for transport purposes by a transport authority.
- Transport Movement The conveyance (physical carriage) of people, animals, goods, or other objects from place to place.

- Transmission Control Number A unique reference number generated by the system of the airline transmitting the ticket data, and printed on an Automated Ticket.
- Transitional Automated Ticket The form of automated ticket, normally issued by airline offices, described in IATA Resolution 722. It is a multi-copy carbonized paper ticket.
- Transit Time The time an aircraft remains in transit at the station in question.
- Transit Station A scheduled en route stopping station on a flight.
- Transit Flight A flight, designated by a Flight Designator, during an en route landing at the station in question.
- Transfer A change from the service of one carrier to another service of the same carrier (online transfer) or to the service of another carrier (interline transfer).

- Traffic Load Passengers, baggage, cargo, mail and equipment in compartments not included in dry operating weight of the aircraft.
- Traffic Document Ticket, electronic ticket, MCO, EMD or any other accountable passenger traffic document.
- TOW Take-off Weight. Actual weight including take-off fuel of an aircraft at take-off. It is calculated by adding zero fuel weight and take-off fuel.

- Tour Operator A travel agent specializing in package vacations.
- Tour Conductor An individual who is in charge of and/or who personally escorts a group of at least 10 passengers for all or part of the itinerary.

- Tour Basing Fare A fare which may be used only for air transportation as part of an inclusive tour.
- Title A word such as Mr., Mrs., Miss or Dr that is used before someone’s name to indicate their gender, profession or marital status.
- Tipping Limit Table Set of related Tipping Limits.
- Tipping Limit Aft limit on the position of the center of gravity of an aircraft depending on its weight to avoid tipping.
- Time Limit A limitation or restriction of time.

- Ticketing Time Limits The time by which the passenger must secure his ticket for his confirmed reservation as agreed with the airline. The passenger meets this requirement by purchasing a ticket which indicates his reserved space, or by having his previously issued ticket revalidated or reissued to reflect his reserved space.
- Ticketing Time Limit A time by which the passenger must secure his ticket for a confirmed reservation as required by the carrier. See IATA Resolution 766 for additional information.
- Ticketing System The system which imprints on paper or stores electronically (electronic ticket) the automated accountable document, which is represented by a four character code in accordance with Resolution 728, Paragraph 6.
- Ticketing Information Exchange Standard The A4A/IATA standard which defines specifications for the computer to computer exchange of airline industry ticketing information.
- Ticketing Carrier Selection Rules The rules governing the selection by the Travel Agent of the carrier to be designated as the issuing carrier on a neutral ticket.
- Ticketing Airline An airline whose automated tickets are issued through the computer system of a Servicing Airline by imprinting the ticketing airline’s name and numeric accounting code.
- Ticketed Point Mileage The distance between pairs of points published in the Ticketed Point Mileage Manual, using non-stop sector mileages in accordance with IATA Resolution 011.
- Ticketed Point Points shown in the ’good for passage’ section of the passenger ticket.
- Ticket Printer A computer driven device that makes the entries on a paper traffic document.
- Ticket Handler An airline used to perform ticketing services on behalf of the Operating Carrier, in locations where the Operating Carrier does not its own ticketing point and using a different system to that of the Operating Carrier.
- Ticket Either the document entitled “Passenger Ticket and Baggage check“ or an Electronic Ticket.
- Thrust The propulsive force of a jet or rocket engine.
- Through Route The total route from point of departure to point of destination.
- Through Rate The total rate from point of departure to point of destination.

- Tax Exemption Waiver of an obligation to pay taxes on a specified value.
- Tax A compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers’ income and business profits or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions.

- Tariffs The published fares, rates, charges and/or related conditions of carriage of a carrier.
- System Provider The person, company, corporation or other legal entity which supplies the system and is approved by the Participating Airlines.
- System An automated method, including equipment and programs for performing functions like reservations, issuance of tickets, etc.
- SWA Service Weight Adjustment. Standard adjustment to the service weight of an aircraft with optional balance arm and/or index.
- Surname Hereditary name(s) common to all members of a family. Also known as family name or last name. E.g. SMITH. Excludes any potential suffix.
- Surface Transport Vehicle A thing used for transporting people or goods, on land or water. E.g. train, bus, van, ship.
- Surcharge Amount added on to a usual charge for a specific product, purpose, or service.
- Supplier A person or organization that provides something needed such as a product or service, e.g. DCS supplier, Ground Handler.
- Supplementary Information Requirement Requirement to add specific data to the supplementary information (SI) area of each applicable load sheet (provisional, final, ACARS,...).
- Subsequent Segment In relation to a prime segment, any segment(s) that have the same or a later date and are not the arrival segment to the prime segment.
- Structural Load Limitation Limitation of an aircraft defined by the manufacturer in order to avoid overstressing the aircraft.
- Storage Area An area in any structure that provides space for storage.
- Stopover A deliberate interruption of a journey by the passenger, agreed to in advance by the carrier, at a point between the place of departure and the place of destination. For the purpose of fare construction means when a passenger arrives at an intermediate point and is scheduled to depart later than 24 hours after arrival (local time). Exception: for travel wholly within Central America or for travel wholly between Central America and Panama: when a passenger arrives at an intermediate point and is scheduled to depart later than 6 hours after arrival (local time).

- Stabilizer Trim Method Method for specifying stabilizer trim. This can be by CG relationship with Stabilizer Setting for given weights or as a rate of change per 1%MAC/RC from the maximum defined %MAC/RC.
- Stabilizer The horizontal tail plane of an aircraft used to trim it (adjust its balance).
- STAB Text Text to be appended to the stabilizer trim value printed on the load sheet depending on the stabilizer trim range it belongs to.
- STAB Table Set of related stabilizer trim settings for given flap settings or thrust ratings.
- STAB at Take-off The required position of the horizontal stabilizer based on the aircraft performance configuration at take-off.
- STAB at Landing The required position of the horizontal stabilizer based on the aircraft performance configuration at landing.

- Shopping A dialogue that is generated from a direct or indirect distribution channel to an airline rules engine via a DAS API to request a product offer from a carrier and allow such carrier to respond with the offer based on the information received in the request.
- Shared Airline Designation Flight A flight designated by a Flight Designator of one airline but operated by another airline on its behalf as part of a commercial agreement, for example, franchise/commuter style operations. Only the Airline Designator of the first (non-operating) airline is used in the Flight Designator(s) of the operating flight.
- Servicing Airline An airline whose computer system is used to make reservations and print (or to acquire ticketing data to print) neutral tickets either on its own behalf or on behalf of other airlines. Electronic tickets may also be used. A servicing airline shall also act as a ticketing airline.
- Service Definition Description and characteristics of a non-flight product or service that can be separately sold and delivered. E.g. bag, seat, meal on a flight.
- Service Bundle A set of services offered for sale as a single service.
- Service The instance of a specific flight or Service Definition as it has been offered to (and eventually ordered and consumed by) a specific Customer in the context of a specific Offer and/or Order.
- Service Work or the doing of work for another or community to include utilities and transport.
- Sell and Report Agreement A bilateral or multi-lateral agreement between carriers which requires signatories to exchange and maintain information relative to the availability of space on selected flights and between specified points (see Resolution 766).
- Sell and Report Agreement A bilateral or multi-lateral agreement between Members, or between Members and CRSs, which requires signatories to exchange and maintain information relative to the availability of space on selected flights and between specified points. It further requires each signatory, upon receipt of request for another signatory’s space, to: advise the person requesting the space in accordance with known availability; and report the action to be taken under “Interline Point“ above to the Member in accordance with terms of agreement.
- Self-service The process by which a customer can do one or more of the following tasks without assistance by another person: make/change a reservation, purchase a ticket, change a ticket, obtain a boarding pass, obtain baggage tags, board a flight, etc.
- Selective Query A mechanism by which a controlling airline/CRS may regulate/activate a seamless function.
- Segment Dependency Bilateral agreements for selling specific segments together.
- Segment (Sometimes referred to as City Pair) The operation between board point and any subsequent off point within the same flight.
- Segment A leg or a group of legs from boarding point of a passenger to a deplaning point on a given flight.
- Security Screening Result A status of an item obtained by security screening, such as rejected or cleared.
- Security Profile The extent to which a person or organization attracts security notice.
- Security Instruction A direction or order in a security context.
- Security Control A set of principles or procedures according to which something is done; an organized scheme or method for security.
- Security Authorization An official permission, sanction from a security context.

- Sectional Rate The rate established and used by a scheduled air carrier(s) (including any local or joint rate) for a section of a through route.
- Sectional Fare A fare for travel by one class of service which is established and used by a scheduled air carrier(s) (including any individual joint fares) for a section of a through route.
- Seating Configuration Planned utilization layout of aircraft cabin section/zone.
- Seat Row Row of passenger seats located in the cabin.
- Seat Profile Airline defined characteristics shared by a group of seats.
- Seat Pitch The distance between the front edge of one seat in an aircraft and the front edge of the seat immediately in front when both are in an upright position.
- Seat Map Display which indicates positioning, availability status and/or characteristics of specific seats for a given flight/date. This typically contains information about cabin classes, location of cabin components, etc., as well as, an indication of which seats have been reserved and which are still available.
- Seat description Code Code enabling to give specific information relating to individual passenger positions.
- Seat Passenger position located in the cabin.
- Seamless Connectivity Link Any link (direct, indirect, switched, virtual, on-demand) via any path, media or technique which is capable of providing Seamless Connectivity. No limit on communications path, media, or technique is intended or implied.
- Screening Result Reason A cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event in this case the screening result reason (or alarm).
- Schedules Facilitator A person appointed by the appropriate authority to collect and review airline schedules at Level 2 airports, and to recommend schedule adjustments as necessary.
- Scheduled Air Service A service offered by an airline which is displayed in an official airline guide, has a two-character or three-letter airline designator, and operates between points having three-letter city/airport codes.
- Scheduled Air Service A series of flights possessing the following characteristics: (a) performed by aircraft for the transport of passengers and/or cargo for remuneration, in such a manner that its services are available, directly or indirectly, to the general public; and (b) operated so as to service traffic between the same two or more points, either: (i) according to a published timetable, or (ii) with flights so regular or frequent that they constitute a recognizably systematic series.
- Schedule Change Any modification to the operation of a flight which may require passenger notification. This may be a change in arrival or departure times, flight number or class of service, frequency of operation or airports served, etc. A change in arrival or departure time, as a result of a city’s conversion to or from Daylight Time also constitutes a schedule change. There is no change when the only factor is conversion to or from Daylight Time, with departure and arrival times remaining the same in terms of local time.
- Scattershot The procedure of handling reservations transactions by dealing with one or more offices independently of other offices and which results in one or more offices not having knowledge of the passenger’s complete remaining itinerary including the current status of each remaining segment (see Resolution 766).
- Scattershot The procedure of making reservations transactions by dealing with one or more airline offices, or CRSs, independently of other airline offices, or CRSs, and which results in one or more airline offices, or CRSs, not having a record of the passenger’s complete remaining itinerary including the current status of each segment.
- Scanner A device that scans objects and converts them into or extracts digital data. E.g. document scanner, barcode reader, biometric scanner.
- Scan Band The area across the width of a traffic document not less than 1.588 cm (0.625 in) in height from the bottom of the document.

- Routing A list of consecutive legs in operational sequence between the station of origin and the station of destination of any flight.
- Round Trip Is defined as (a) travel from one point to another and return by the same air route used outbound whether or not the fares outbound and inbound be the same, or (b) travel from one point to another and return by an air route different from that used outbound for which the same normal, through, one way fare is established. For the purpose of fare construction means travel entirely by air from a point to another point and return to the original point comprising two half round trip fare components only, for which the applicable half round trip fare for each component, measured from the point of unit origin, is the same for the routing travelled; provided that this definition shall not apply to round the world travel if the fares to be used differ through class of service/seasonality/day-of-week/carrier variations, the outbound fare shall be used also for the inbound fare component for the purpose of determining if the pricing unit is a round trip.
- Round Trip Travel entirely by air from a point to another point and return to the original point comprising two half round trip fare components only, for which the applicable half round trip fare for each component, measured from the point of unit origin, is the same for the routing traveled; provided that this definition shall not apply to round the world travel. - Restraint Permanent or removable fixture for the securing of load such as locks or nets.
- Resource A stock or supply of money, materials, staff, and other assets that can be drawn on by a person or organization in order to function effectively

- Reservations Control Carrier The airline which controls the reservations for a flight. This may be used in joint operation or pool flights.
- Reservations Booking Designator The code used in reservations transactions to identify a compartment on an aircraft and/or a special inventory control. It is the booking class usually determined by the fare basis. The RBDs are typically represented by alphabetic characters. These codes are shown in the A4A/IATA Reservations Interline Message Procedures *Passenger (AIRIMP).
- Reservations Means the allotment in advance of seating or sleeping accommodation for a passenger or of space or weight capacity for baggage, cargo or mail. This term is also applied to hotel, car and other types of travel services.
- Reservation Booking Designator A categorization used to facilitate access to inventory, application of filed fares, and to identify cabin entitlement. Identified using a single alpha character. E.g. “J“ for Business Class Premium, “D“ for Business Discounted.
- Reservation The allotment in advance of seating or sleeping accommodation for a passenger or of space or weight capacity for baggage, cargo or mail. This term is also applied to hotel, car and other types of travel services.
- Rerouting Change of routing and/or other changes which require ticket reissuance.
- Rerouting With respect to a passenger, a change of route, fare, carrier, type of aircraft, class of service, flight or validity from that originally provided in the appropriate transportation document.

- Related Charges Charges such as cancellation penalties, non-refundable amounts, rebooking and rerouting charges, stopover charges, weekend surcharges etc., and excess baggage charges.

- Refund The repayment to the purchaser of all or a portion of a fare, rate or charge for unused carriage or service (See IATA PSCRM Resolutions 735d and 737).
- Reference Chord See MAC.
- Reference Arm Reference station/axis. Selected Station around which all index values are calculated.
- Redress Case A person’s case of being registered with a country’s redress program, which can eliminate watch list misidentification and assist in identity verification.
- Record Locator In AIRIMP messages, the record locator is composed of the booking office, the location of record and the point of sale information. See the AIRIMP manual for complete details.
- Reconfirmation A requirement that passengers, under certain given circumstances, advise a carrying Member of their intention to use the space reserved.
- Reconfirmation A requirement that passengers, under certain given circumstances, advise a carrying Member of their intention to use the space reserved (See IATA PSCRM Resolution 766).
- Receiving Member The Member on whose flight a passenger is to be carried from an interline point or gap.
- Rear Edge The end point aft of the mean aerodynamic chord.
- Real-time A computer system which processes the input and gives a response immediately or within seconds.
- RBD Reservation Booking Designator. A categorization used to facilitate access to inventory, application of filed fares, and to identify cabin entitlement. Identified using a single alpha character. E.g. “J“ for Business Class Premium, “D“ for Business Discounted.
- Rates Tariff The tariff concerned with rates and related charges.
- Rate Proration Proration on the basis of the respective local rates.
- Rate The amount charged by the carrier(s) for the carriage of a unit of goods or excess baggage and is the current rate which the carrier, in the publication it normally uses to publish rates, holds out to the public or the appropriate segment of the public, as being applicable for carriage of a unit of weight (or volume) and/or value of goods or excess baggage.
- Quote Availability Agreement A bilateral or multilateral agreement between Members which permits each signatory to book another Member’s space by checking the required flight’s availability through local or toll-free telephone access and sending an appropriate message to the Member concerned.
- Quality Control The method of reviewing performed work to determine if a particular function is being accomplished accurately and in accordance with established procedures.
- Qualifier A data element whose value, extracted from a code list, gives specific meaning to the function of another data element or a segment.
- Published Rate A rate, the amount of which is specifically set forth in the publication the carrier normally uses to establish such rates.
- Published Fare A fare, the amount of which is specifically set forth in the carrier’s fares tariff.
- Published Charge A charge, the amount of which is specifically set forth in the carrier’s fares or rates tariff.
- PTC Passenger Type Code. A code used to identify the type of passenger, e.g., adult, infant, etc., in order to determine the type of fare.
- Protecting Reservation A tentative reservation on a Member other than one originally preferred by passenger and subject to cancellation or change to definite status on demand of Member holding the tentative reservation in accordance with applicable procedures.
- Proration The division of a joint fare, rate or charge between the carriers concerned on an agreed basis.
- Prorate (Here used as noun) A portion of a joint fare, rate or charge obtained by proration.
- Proportional Rate A rate which is used in combination with other rates to establish a through rate.
- Promotion Information related to publicizing a product, organization, or venture so as to increase sales or public awareness.
- Product Definition Information related to the properties, characteristics, and descriptions of a service or product which can be sold and distributed.
- Product Booking
- Product Item or service offered for sale. This could be for example a travel product, or also a product from a supplier such as from an aircraft manufacturer.
- Process A series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.
- Procedure A series of actions conducted in a certain order or manner.
- Printer A device for printing text or pictures or barcodes, especially one linked to a computer.
- Prime Host Airline The airline which controls the System in which other airlines are hosted.
- Pricing Unit A journey or part of a journey which is priced as a separate entity, i.e. is capable of being ticketed separately
- Pricing Method Method adopted by an organization to set a product or service’s selling price.
- Price Variance Acceptable amount and/or percentage of the total amount by which the Order Item price can vary. Example: 20 USD, 2 Percent Price Variance supports specifying Payment Processing Rules, including payment failure.
- Price Valuation The monetary worth of something, especially as estimated by a valuer.
- Price Restriction Boundaries or rules of variance of price amount.
- Price Quote This is pertinent information for an order change involving re-pricing as it provides the order pricing history e.g. indicating that an order has already been priced a number of times and the pricing source and history.
- Price Guarantee Obligation that a price will not change.
- Price Factor Elements with the capacity to produce effects on the price.
- Price Component Individual elements that comprise the total price of a product or service.
- Price Class A price point within a particular Cabin Type (sometimes referred to as “Fare Families“).
- Price Amount A monetary quantity expected (or given) in payment for something.
- Price The amount of money expected, required, or given in payment for something.
- Preprinted Document Number A document number that is preprinted on the traffic document at the time of manufacture.
- Prepaid Ticket Advice The notification by teletype, commercial wire or mail that a person in one city has requested issuance of prepaid transportation as described in the authority, to a person in another city.
- Premium Economy Fare The fare established for a premium economy class service.
- Premium Economy Class A class of service with seating standards which may be superior to those provided on economy/tourist class but less liberal than standards provided in business class.
- Pre-flight Check An internal procedure in which a Member checks its reservations records to eliminate duplicate reservations, incorrect recording, or other errors.
- Potable Water Tank Tank of potable water located in the cabin.
- Potable Water Distribution Element A specific allocation in a potable water distribution.
- Potable Water Distribution Distribution of potable water to each individually specified potable water tank or to all tanks.
- Postal Address Natural or physical address used for postal service. May be a building address, airport address, etc.
- Portion One segment or consecutive segments (even though gap intervenes) via any one Member.
- Point of Turnaround The farthest geographical fare break (between two fare components) from the Pricing Unit origin.
- Point of Sale As defined in AIRIMP, SIPP or as bilaterally “Point of Sale Information” is a collection of data that identifies the requestor
- Point A particular spot, place, or position in an area or on a map, object, or surface.
- PNR Address A term used to designate an alpha-numeric code referring to a specific area in the memory of an automated reservations system in which a given Passenger Name Record (PNR) is stored.
- Planning Range
- Pilferage/shortage Baggage Items are reported or known to be missing from a piece(s) of baggage.
- Physical Property A property used to characterize matter and energy and their interactions. E.g. weight.
- Phone A telephone number is a sequence of digits assigned to a fixed-line telephone subscriber station connected to a telephone line or to a wireless electronic telephony device, such as a radio telephone or a mobile telephone, or to other devices for data transmission via the public switched telephone network (PSTN) or other private networks
- Permission The action of authorizing, or fact of being authorized.
- Performance Indicator A set of measures that help a company determine if it is reaching its performance and operational goals. Indicators can be both financial and non-financial, and there is no one set of indicators used by all companies.
- Penalty Information related to a punishment imposed for breaking a law, rule, or contract.
- PCTMAC Percent Mean Aerodynamic Chord (%MAC). Numerical representation of a location as a percentage of the mean aerodynamic chord (MAC). For a location (balance arm) the corresponding %MAC (%RC) is calculated by following formula: %MAC = 100*(Balance Arm - LEMAC)/MAC where MAC = length of Mean Aerodynamic Chord in length units LEMAC = horizontal distance in length units from the reference datum to location of the Leading Edge.
- Payment Method A form of procedure for the payment of goods or services.
- Payment Information Information related to the settlement of a transaction through monetary or other compensations. In distribution standard Orders, the presence of Payment Information implies a commitment to pay.
- Payment Card A device that enables its owner (the cardholder) to make a payment by electronic funds transfer.
- Payer A person or organization that gives someone money that is due for work done, goods received, or a debt incurred.
- Passenger Type Code A code used to identify the type of passenger, e.g., adult, infant, etc., in order to determine the type of fare.
- Passenger Trim Output Requirement Requirement to put specific passenger trim output on the load sheet.
- Passenger Ticket Those portions of the ticket issued by carrier which provide for the carriage of the passenger.
- Passenger Standard Weights Approved passenger standard weights to be used for weight and balance calculation.
- Passenger Segment Transportation of a passenger on a Dated Operating Segment.
- Passenger Process A process related to a passenger, such as departures transferring, or terminating passenger process. Refer to business architecture.
- Passenger Name Record A record of each passenger’s travel requirements which contains all information necessary to enable reservations to be processed and controlled by the booking airline and the airline(s) participating in the carriage.
- Passenger Movement Movement involving the transportation of a passenger.
- Passenger Leg Transportation of a passenger on a Dated Operating Leg.
- Passenger Journey A collection of segments which satisfies transportation of a passenger for a given origin and destination.
- Passenger Group A number of individual passengers traveling under one commercial name that associates them. E.g. a Tour group or a group for sales allotment from airline to agency. #EndOfDef# Group bookings are subject to special booking rules and may be eligible for special fare rules. Usage and nature of groups is left to bilateral agreements.
- Passenger Function A function related to a passenger such as authentication or security conformance. Refer to business architecture pillar.
- Passenger Coupon It is the portion of the Automated Ticket/Boarding Pass (ATB) that constitutes the passenger’s printed evidence of the journey.
- Passenger Activity An activity related to a passenger such as “give passenger some assistance“.
- Passenger (carbonised documents) Coupon The portion of the Passenger Ticket and Baggage Check or Excess Baggage Ticket that constitutes the passenger’s written evidence of the journey.
- Passenger Any person carried on an aircraft and covered by a ticket.
- Passenger Any person, except members of the crew, carried or to be carried in an aircraft with the consent of the carrier.
- Passenger Any person except members of the crew carried or to be carried with the consent of the carrier, on board of any transport vehicle such as aircraft, train, bus, ship.
- Pass A card, ticket, or permit giving authorization for the holder to enter or have access to a place, form of transportation, or event.
- Party Role The role of a party. A set of connected behaviors, rights, obligations, beliefs, and norms as conceptualized by parties.
- Party An individual, a group, or a body having a role in the air transport industry. Party has a legal connotation in a business transaction.
- Participating Offer Airline An Airline (that may be the marketing or operating if applicable) other than the Offer Responsible Airline involved in an Offer or subsequent Order.
- Participating Member (see “Carrying Member“)
- Participating Carrier A carrier over whose routes one or more sections of carriage under the air waybill or ticket is undertaken or performed.
- Participating Airlines Those airlines which are party to the IATA Multilateral Interline Traffic Agreement and have entered into an agreement for the issuance of Automated tickets in a particular country/area.
- Pantry Distribution Element A specific allocation in a pantry distribution.
- Pantry Distribution Allocation of galley equipment, food, service items etc. to specified locations or regardless of location.
- Pantry Removable catering equipment.
- Pallet A platform with a flat under-surface onto which dead load is bulk loaded and designated to be locked on a position/bay as a unit. See also unit load device.
- Oversale A condition which occurs when a passenger who has a valid completed ticket or of whom the airline has a positive reservation record, is not accommodated at flight departure, or is carried but not in the accommodation reserved.
- Over-booking A condition which exists when more seats have been booked on a flight than seats allowable for sale.
- Other Payment Method Information relating to non-standard forms of payment which may be used in exchange for goods or services.
- Other Charges Charges such as taxes, fees etc., excluding excess baggage charges.
- Other Address Non-conventional address types.
- Originating Member Member transporting passenger over first portion of itinerary.
- Originating Flight A flight identified by a Flight Designator, commencing at the station in question.
- Originating Airline The airline upon whose services the interline transportation of a passenger and his baggage either commences at the original place of departure or continues from place of stopover.
- Original Receiving Carrier The carrier on whose flight a passenger is originally ticketed to be carried from a connection point (see Resolution 735d).
- Origin Destination The Origin and Destination airport/city pair which confines a passenger journey or an aircraft flight.
- Origin The initial starting place of the journey as shown on the ticket.
- Organization An organized structure set up for a particular purpose, such as a business, government body, department, charity, or financial institution.
- Order Item An individually priced item within an Order, made up of one or more Services. May or may not be a selected Offer Item (e.g. non-chargeable Services available on request such as a wheelchair).
- Order A uniquely identified record of the agreement of one party with another to receive products and services under specified terms and conditions. Order supports the sale of a flexible range of airline products and services that are not necessarily Journey based (e.g. subscription services). #EndOfDef# Comment: A ‘PNR’, ‘super PNR’ and ‘ticket’ are all today’s versions of airline implementations of aspects of an Order. „An Order will contain one or more Order Items each with an identifier that is unique within an Airline’s Order Management system. An Order may support non-homogeneity, i.e. each passenger in an Order may hold different sets of order items at different prices.
- Optical Scanning Machine reading by means of optical devices such as light pen or OCR equipment.
- Optical Character Recognition A machine readable system for reading of traffic document numbers using a machine readable type font.
- Operator A person or company that engages in or runs a business or enterprise.
- Operational Leg A flight leg which is physically operated and identified by its Airline Designator and Flight Number. Any other Airline Designators and/or Flight Numbers associated with the same flight leg are considered to be non-operational flight legs. For further guidance, see also IATA SSIM Appendix H: Duplicate Flight Legs.
- Operational Leg A flight which is physically operated and identified by its airline designator and flight number. Any other airline designators and/or flight numbers associated with the same flight are considered to be non-operational flights.
- Operation The act of a transport vehicle traveling from point to point.
- Operating Weight Sum of dry operating weight plus take-off fuel
- Operating Carrier The carrier actually providing carriage or other services incidental to such carriage.
- Operating Carrier The airline actually providing carriage or other services incidental to such air carriage. The Operating Carrier may be different from the Marketing Carrier in situations where bilateral agreements exist, e.g. code share agreement.
- One Way Subjourney Part of a journey wherein travel from one country does not return to such country and for which the fare is assessed as a single pricing unit using a one way fare.
- On-Line Transfer Transfer from the service of one carrier to another service of the same carrier.
- On-line Rate (see “Local Rate“)
- On-line Fare (see “Local Fare“)
- On-line Connection (see “Connection“)
- On-line Charge (see “Local Charge“)
- On-line Indicates within one airline or one system, or connected to a computer system.
- On-line Used in conjunction with another word to describe anything involving carriage over the airline’s own company only, such as an on-line itinerary, on-line reservation, on-line stopover, on-line connection, etc.
- Offer Responsible Airline The Airline responsible for returning a combined Offer, which may include services from other Airlines (Participating Offer Airlines), to the requesting entity. The ORA subsequently performs Order Management functions against this Offer.
- Offer Item A priced grouping of one or more services within an Offer.
- Offer ID Facilitates the tracking and verification of individually priced Offer(s) selected from the shopping response. #EndOfDef# An Offer ID is unique to each individually priced Offer in the shopping response even if the Offer price is zero. An OfferID may be specific to individual passengers in the Offer, and may be associated with a journey. The set of Offer IDs returned in a response is referenced by a Shopping Response ID.
- Offer A proposal to sell a specific set of products or Services under specific conditions, for a certain price. Can be the response to a shopping request. #EndOfDef# Can be a regular Offer or an A La Carte Offer. A La Carte Offer is defined as a container for A La Carte Offer Items. This supports a shopping basket concept for non-flight services. The main purpose of this structure is to reduce the size of the messages by inserting Offer Items which are applicable to multiple flight-related Offers. NB. For the OfferID of the ALaCarteOffer: Default OfferID identifier for A La Carte Offer Items in a scenario where items here are not selected for a flight-related Offer above.
- Off-Premise Transitional Automated Ticket Either form of automated ticket, normally issued by agents, described in Resolution 722a. It is a multi-copy carbonised ticket.
- Off-Premise Ticket A ticket described in Resolution 722a and intended for use by Travel Agents, whether or not this bears a preprinted individual airline identity.
- Off-Premise Location Any non airline location where automated tickets are issued, e.g. an approved location of a passenger sales agent or a commercial account.
- Off Point (see “Deplaning Point“)
- NUC The neutral unit of construction.
- Normal Fare Open Jaw Travel from one country and return thereto, comprising two international fare components, only and where a) origin open jaw: the outward point of departure in the country of unit origin and the inward point of arrival in the country of unit origin are different OR b) turnaround open jaw: the outward point of arrival and the inward point of departure are different OR c) double open jaw: the outward point of departure in the country of unit origin and the inward point of arrival in the country of unit origin are different (origin jaw) AND the outward point of arrival and the inward point of departure are different (turnaround open jaw).
- Normal Fare A fare established in the Resolution 030/040/050/060 series for business, first, premium economy or economy class service and any other fare denominated and published as a normal fare (e.g. CIF, FIF, WIF, YIF). Children’s fares and infants’ fares which are established as a percentage of the fares referred to above are also considered to be normal fares.
- Normal Fare A fare established in the Resolution 040/050/060 series for intermediate, first or economy class service and any other fare denominated and published as a normal fare (e.g. C2, F2, Y2). Children’s fares and infants’ fares which are established as a percentage of the fares referred to above are also considered to be normal fares.
- Non-TC Member A Member of IATA who has elected not to participate in Tariff Coordinating Conferences.
- Non-Participating Member (see “Non-Carrying Member“)
- Non-Operational Leg (see “Commercial Leg“)
- Non-IATA Carrier Any carrier who is not a Member of IATA.
- Non-Carrying Member A Member who will not participate in itinerary but may handle passenger’s reservation.
- No-Show Charge The charge made by reason of the failure of a passenger to use reserved accommodation, either through failure to arrive at the airport at the time fixed by the carrier, or through arriving improperly documented or otherwise not ready to travel on the flight (see Resolution 735d).
- No-Show A failure to use reserved accommodation for reasons other than misconnections.
- No Record A condition which exists whenever a passenger presents a ticket for reserved space but the boarding Member has no record of ever confirming or receiving booking for that reserved space.
- New Receiving Carrier A new carrying carrier selected for onward carriage by the forwarding carrier from the point where involuntary change of routing becomes necessary (see Resolution 735d).
- Neutral Ticketing Scheme A computer system that issues Neutral Tickets in a Travel Agent’s office on behalf of various airlines participating in that scheme.
- Neutral Ticket The form of an electronic ticket or paper Automated Ticket for use by Travel Agents. In the case of paper tickets, there is no preprinted individual airline identity.
- Network Address A virtual address in an IT network.
- National A person who has the citizenship of a country, either by birth or by naturalisation
- National A person who has the citizenship of a country, either by birth or by naturalisation.
- Name Suffix Letters which follow a person’s name and which provide additional information about the person. E.g. Jr., Sr., III, Ret., Esq.
- Multiple Purpose Document A form used for automated issuance of interline accountable traffic documents other than the Passenger Ticket and Baggage Check. It is described in Resolutions 726, 726a and 726b. It is a multi-copy carbonised form or a document issued coupon-by-coupon for use by carriers and travel agents.
- Multiple Identifier A set of identifiers to be used when multiple parties have different identifiers for the same item.
- Multi-Host System A system that provides more than one airline with the facility to process, on an inventory basis, reservations and other passenger related functions.
- Multi-Access Ticketing A system whereby a Travel Agent with a video display unit (VDU) and a ticket printer has access to the reservations and ticketing systems of more than two airlines, and the Agent can issue tickets of those airlines on its ticket printer.
- Multi-Access System A System which enables a user to have real time access to a variety of airline Systems through a common switching centre and/or interface. See also “Direct Access“ and “Single Access System“.
- Movement The arrival or departure of an aircraft.
- Movement Events that involve a change in the position or location of objects of interest to the airline industry. Examples include aircraft movement (flight or surface movement), vehicle movement (Tugs and Airside Vehicles) and Item movement (bags on conveyors, ULDs).
- Months For definition of “Month(s)“ as related to ticket validity, see IATA Resolution 735.
- Missing Restraint Rule Restriction on weight applicable when one or more locks are inoperable or missing.
- Missing Restraint Part of the aircraft restraint system missing or unserviceable.
- Mishandled Baggage Baggage which is damaged, delayed, lost or pilfered. (currently called “Baggage Mishandled“ in Reso 780)
- Misconnection A passenger who, due to late arrival or non-operation of his original delivering flight, arrives at the interline point by his original delivering flight, an alternative flight or surface transportation, too late to board his original receiving flight. See Resolution 766.
- Miscellaneous Charges Order An accountable paper document issued by a carrier or its agents requesting issue of an appropriate Passenger Ticket and Baggage Check or provision of services to the person named in such document (see Resolutions 725, 725a and 725b). Typically used for such things as group deposits, excess baggage, optional services, etc. See “Electronic Miscellaneous Document“ for the electronic equivalent of MCO.
- Miscellaneous Charge Order An accountable IATA document used to process the payment of travel arrangements.
- Minimum Weights Table Set of minimum certified weights.
- Minimum Weights Minimum certified weights (ZFW, LW, TOW, TW) applicable to an aircraft or a group of aircraft.
- Minimum Tour Price The minimum selling price for the tour calculated as the air fare plus an amount for land arrangements.
- Minimum Group Size The minimum number of passengers required to qualify for a fare.
- Mileage Proration Proration on the basis of the respective local mileages.
- Middle Name A person’s name placed after the first name and before the surname. E.g. GEORGE.
- Message A verbal, written, or recorded communication sent to or left for a recipient who cannot be contacted directly.
- Membership The state of belonging to a group, such as a club or trade association.
- Member in Control of Passenger The Member or the CRS with whom a passenger is presently doing business locally and with respect to whom the passenger has become a local passenger, or the Member whose service will next be used by a passenger en route.
- Media Object Electronic documents, images, and other files which accompany and support some information.
- Measure A certain quantity or degree of something.

- Maximum Weights Table Set of maximum certified weights.
- Maximum Weights Maximum certified weights (ZFW, LW, TOW, TW) applicable to an aircraft or a group of aircraft.
- Maximum Permitted Mileage Maximum permitted mileages as established in accordance with Resolution 011.
- Married Segments Married segments is a term used to identify two or more segments in an itinerary which are actioned as a single unit (set).
- Marketing Carrier The carrier that sells with its own code as part of a code-share agreement on a flight actually operated by another carrier.
- Marketing Carrier The carrier that sells transport on a vehicle operated by itself, or by another carrier as part of a commercial agreement between the two parties.
- Mail All types of material communications carried on an aircraft, e.g. General Post Office mail, diplomatic mail, military mail and company (airline) mail.
- Magnetic Stripe A stripe of magnetic material affixed to the back of a Computer Ticket or an Automated Ticket/ Boarding Pass or Credit Card, on which most of the data relevant to that document is magnetically encoded, and is machine readable.
- Machine Readable Indicates that information is acceptable to read by a system without manual input.
- MAC Mean Aerodynamic Chord. The average length of the chord (width) of the aircraft wing. Also referred to as RC by some manufactures.
- Luggage (see “Baggage“)
- Lozenge The start/stop character used in conjunction with an OCR document number on flight coupons to identify the 13-digit numbering scheme as opposed to the 12-digit scheme.
- Loyalty Redemption A form of payment by which the customer uses a virtual currency of a Loyalty Program Account (such as air miles) in exchange for goods or services.
- Loyalty Program Account An account set up for a customer within a loyalty program.
- Loyalty Program A rewards program offered by a company to customers who frequently make purchases, which may give a customer advanced access to new products, special sales coupons or free merchandise.
- Lost Baggage A piece(s) of baggage which is irretrievably lost. (called ’Baggage, Loss’ in Reso 780)
- Logistics Item Status The status of a logistics item at a particular time in a process.
- Logistics Item Incident An event related to a logistics item that occurs spontaneously, but to which the organization is required to respond.
- Logistics Item An item connected with the movement of cargo, bags, or passengers for operations.
- Lock ULD restraint which can be fixed within the aircraft.
- Location of Record (see A4A/IATA Reservations Interline Message Procedures – Passenger (AIRIMP))
- Location A particular place or position.
- Local Reservation A reservation for a passenger who has booked directly with an airline’s local office or through a local travel agent or local office of another Member located in the same metropolitan area, or the area served by the airport(s) of your city.
- Local Rate A rate which applies for carriage over the lines of a single carrier.
- Local Passenger A passenger who is in touch directly (or through another person) with the airline’s local office, or is in touch with the airline’s local office through a travel agent or local office of another Member.
- Local Fare A fare which applies for carriage over the lines of a single carrier.
- Local Currency Fares Fares and related charges expressed in the currency of the country of commencement of travel. See Resolution 024a for those countries where the US Dollar is used for local currency
- Local Combination Combination of two fare components to create a single pricing unit - this also applies to the combination of two one-way fares, provided the second fare component returns to the country of origin of the first fare component. NOTES: 1) Canada and USA are considered one country 2) Scandinavia is considered one country
- Local Charge A charge which applies for carriage over the lines of a single carrier.
- Loaded Index at ZFW A numerical representation of the C of G of the aircraft at zero fuel weight expressed in index units.
- Loaded Index at TOW A numerical representation of the C of G of the aircraft at take-off weight expressed in index units.
- Loaded Index at LAW A numerical representation of the C of G of the aircraft at landing weight expressed in index units.
- Load Sheet Output Requirement Requirement to put specific balance, passenger trim or supplementary information on specific types of load sheet (provisional, final, ACARS,...).
- Load Sheet A legal document which states the weight data and the balance condition of the loaded aircraft for each individual flight. The term load sheet includes provisional load sheet, final load sheet, ACARS load sheet or any other approved form of transmission.
- Load Information Code Code enabling to identify load categories and to give information in connection with ULD handling for use in traffic documents and messages.
- Load Configuration Planned utilization layout of aircraft hold.
- Linear Load Limitation See running load limitation.
- Line A curve connecting all points having a specified common property.
- Limited Agreement An agreement reached by two or more TC Members; binding on those Members who are party to it and upon those Members not present at the Conference who operate Third/Fourth or Fifth Freedom Services between the countries between which the agreement is to apply.
- Limitation A principle that limits the extent of something.
- License Plate A unique identifier composed of the Baggage Tag Issuer Code (BTIC) and the tag serial number.
- Length A measurement or extent of something from end to end; the greater of two or the greatest of three dimensions of an object.
- Leg The space between two consecutive scheduled stops on any given flight.
- Leg The operation between a departure station and the next arrival station.
- Leading Edge The end point forward of the mean aerodynamic chord.
- LAW Landing Weight. Weight of an aircraft at landing. It is calculated by subtracting the trip fuel from the take-off weight.
- Lateral Imbalance Limit Table Set of related Lateral Imbalance Limits.
- Lateral Imbalance Limit Limit of any imbalance caused by off-center loading of payload and/or fuel.
- Lateral Imbalance Expression of any imbalance caused by off-center loading of payload and/or fuel.
- Lateral Arm Lateral distance in length units from the aircraft centerline to the location. Linear dimensions extending to the left of the aircraft centerline are specified as negative and those extending to the right as positive.
- Late Cancellation A reservation cancelled after the latest appropriate time prior to scheduled departure time specified by the Member.
- Last Carrier The participating carrier over whose air routes the last section of carriage under the Ticket is undertaken or performed.
- Label A small piece of paper, fabric, plastic, or similar material attached to an object and giving information about it.
- Jurisdiction The official power to make legal decisions and judgements.
- Journey Origin to destination of the entire ticket.
- Joint Rate A rate which applies for carriage over the lines of two or more carriers and which is published as a single amount.
- Joint Operation Flight A flight on which more than one airline operates one or more of its legs. Only one Flight Designator exists for each operating flight.
- Joint Fare A fare which applies for carriage over the lines of two or more carriers and which is published as a single amount.
- Joint Charge A charge which applies for carriage over the lines of two or more carriers and which is published as a single amount.
- Itinerary A single flight or a series of identical flights defined by a continuous Period and Days of Operation (and Frequency Rate if applicable), each of which consists of one or more contiguous legs which, taken together, describe the complete routing of that flight.
- Itinerary The sum of all portions from beginning to ending of passenger’s trip (journey), even though separated by gap(s).
- Itinerary Schedule and location information for travel.
- Item Movement Movement which involves the transportation of any kind of item.

- International-Domestic Transfer A change between the international service of one carrier and domestic service of the same carrier (online transfer) or another carrier (interline transfer).
- International Transfer A change from the international service of one carrier to another international service of the same carrier (online transfer) or to the international service of another carrier (interline transfer).
- International Flight Leg A flight leg between two stations to which different ISO country codes apply.
- International Carriage Except for the purpose of the Warsaw Convention or the Montreal Convention, carriage in which, according to the contract of carriage, the place of departure and any place of landing are situated in more than one State. As used in this definition, the term “State“ includes all territory subject to the sovereignty, suzerainty, mandate, authority or trusteeship thereof.

- Interline Transfer Transfer from the service of one carrier to the service of another carrier.
- Interline Settlement Information Information related to the value of a product or service as it pertains to interline transactions.
- Interline Point Any point in the itinerary at which the passenger is to change from the flight of one airline to the flight of another, whether a connection or stopover at such point is involved (all airports through which a city or adjacent cities are served by an airline being considered as a single interline point).
- Interline Baggage Checked baggage to be transported over the lines of two or more parties.
- Interline Used in conjunction with another word to describe anything involving two or more Members, such as interline itinerary, interline reservation, interline stopover, interline point, interline transaction, etc.
- Interface A translation function between a user and a system or between a user and a number of systems or between two or more systems.
- Interchange Flight A flight that gives passengers the benefit of a through service and is operated by two or more carriers from the boarding point to the deplaning point using the same aircraft (see Resolution 766).
- Interactive Conversation A conversational dialogue between systems that allows for immediate processing and response and can involve additional queries and responses.
- Interaction A reciprocal action or influence.
- Inter-modal A journey involving two or more different modes of transportation, e.g. between an airline and a railway, as governed by Recommended Practice 1780e.
- Infrastructure A type of Facility. The basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.
- Information Item An individual article or unit of information, typically in electronic form.
- Infant Fare The fare for a person who has not attained his second birthday.
- Infant An individual who has not reached his/her second birthday as of the date of commencement of travel.
- Infant A person who has not reached his/her second birthday as of the date of commencement of travel.
- Individual Party Status A status of a party at a particular time during a process.
- Individual A single human being as distinct from a group, class, or family.
- Indirect Route Any scheduled continuous air route other than a direct route.

- Index Unit Unit used to simplify the calculation of the influence of weight on balance. For a weight W at a certain location (balance arm) the corresponding index is calculated by following formula: Index = W * (Balance Arm - Reference Arm)/C + K where C = Defined weight Constant to convert moment values into index values K = Constant used as a plus value to avoid negative index figures (only used when aircraft weight is included in the given weight).
- Inclusive Tour A pre-arranged combination of air transportation and surface arrangements other than solely public transportation.
- Incident An event that occur spontaneously, but to which the organization is required to respond.
- Incapacitated Passenger A passenger whose physical, medical or mental condition requires individual attention (on enplaning and deplaning, during flight, in an emergency evacuation, during ground handling) which is not normally extended to other passengers.
- Inaugural Flight This is a flight that meets one or more of the following criteria: (a) operation of an air service over an entirely new route; (b) operation of an air service over an existing route with an extension at either the origin and/or destination points; (c) operation of an air service to a new intermediate point; or (d) operation of a new type of aircraft different from that previously operated by the carrier on the route.
- Immediate Family Spouse, children (including adopted children), parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren, parents-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law
- Immediate Family A spouse, children, parents, brothers, sisters, dependent relatives or dependents in the household (see Resolution 788).
- Identity Document Any document which may be used to identify a person or verify aspects of a person’s personal identity. If issued in a small, standard credit card size form, it is usually called an identity card. Some countries issue formal identity documents, while others may require identity verification using informal documents. When the identity document incorporates a person’s photograph, it may be called photo ID. In the absence of a formal identity document, a driver’s license may be accepted in many countries for identity verification. Most countries accept passports as a form of identification.
- Identity Information which uniquely identifies a person, organization, animal or object.
- Identifier A character or group of characters used to identify or name an item of data and possibly to indicate certain properties of that data.
- Ideal Trim Point The optimal position of the center of gravity of an aircraft depending on its weight.
- Ideal Trim Line Table Set of related Ideal Trim Line Points forming an ideal trim line applying to a specific set of CG limits or to all CG limits.
- Ideal Trim Line Line connecting the optimal positions of the center of gravity of an aircraft depending on its weight.
- ICAO Airline Designator A code assigned by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to aircraft operating agencies, aeronautical authorities and services. The codes are unique by airline. Each aircraft operating agency, aeronautical authority and services related to international aviation is allocated both a three-alpha designator and a telephony designator.

- IATA Rate of Exchange The rates of exchange notified by IATA to convert local currency fare to NUC and to convert total NUC amounts to the currency of the country of commencement of transportation.
- IATA Airline Designator Two or three character code assigned by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Designators are used to identify an airline for all commercial purposes, including reservations, timetables, tickets, tariffs, air waybills and in airline interline telecommunications. In the case of two-character designators, they may consist of two alpha characters, one alpha with one numeric, or one numeric with one alpha. In the case of CRS Suppliers, they may only consist of one numeric (number “1“ only) and one alpha. In the case of three-character designators, they must always contain three alpha characters.
- IATA Aircraft Type Grouping of aircraft with the same form, function and specification, currently flown, or soon to be flown. Possible types are defined in the IATA SSIM. #EndOfDef# The same type may include aircrafts with different technical specifications such as engines, range, cockpit configuration.
- Hot Spot Carbon A type of carbon used to produce the image on the flight, exchange and passenger coupons of paper traffic documents.
- Hosted Airline An airline who utilises the facilities of another system to process, on an inventory basis, reservations and other passenger related information.
- Hold Section A subdivision of a non-containerized/palletized (bulk) compartment often separated by a net.
- Hold Layout Planned utilization layout of aircraft hold.
- Hold Compartment A space in an aircraft designated within a hold that can be containerized/palletized or not.
- Hold A space in an aircraft confined by ceiling, floor, walls and bulkhead, used for carrying load.
- Historic Slot A slot allocated on the basis of historic precedence.
- Height A measurement of someone or something from head to foot or from base to top.
- Hard Copy A printed copy of an electronically transmitted text.
- Hard Copy A paper record of information stored or relayed.
- Handling Bay A recessed or enclosed area for baggage handling.
- Hand Baggage See cabin baggage.
- Half Round Trip Fare Half of a specified or constructed round trip normal or special fare. In the absence of a specified or constructed round trip normal fare, the one way normal fare is considered to be a half round trip normal fare. If a specified or constructed one way special fare may be doubled to establish a round trip special fare, the one way special fare is considered to be a half round trip special fare
- Guardian A legal guardian or a person acting in lieu of parents in the event of death or legal incapacity of parents.
- Group Organiser Any person (including a Tariff Conference Member or IATA Sales Agent) who organises and promotes prepaid pre-arranged group travel.
- Group When used in the Interline Reservations context, ten or more passengers, excluding infants, travelling together or where provisions of Reso 766, section14.2 apply.
- Good Merchandise or possession.
- Go-Show (see “Standby“)
- Global Indicator The global routing applicable to the fare as shown in Resolution 011b.
- Given Name A personal name given to someone at birth and used before a family name. Also called first name. E.g. JOHN.
- Giveaway Anything given gratuitously by a carrier, whether or not paid for by the carrier, to a passenger, other than whether or not paid for by the carrier, to a passenger, other than air carriage from airport of departure to airport of destination.

- Geospatial Location A location with geographic or spatial coordinates, on the surface of the earth or in the air. For example Longitude and Latitude.
- Geopolitical Region A collection of countries and/or economies united by a common characteristic, such as political union.
- Geopolitical Location The location which is defined based on politics. For example Country, State, City.
- Gender The gender of an individual party. The state of being male or female (typically used with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones).
- Gateway First point of arrival/last point of departure in a country/area.
- Gap That part of an itinerary (except the distance between two airports serving the same city) involving transportation by means other than by a scheduled service.
- Galley The integral part of the aircraft where pantry/catering material is stored.
- Funnel Flight Also known as“Complexing“, “Starburst“, Shared, “W“ or “Y“ flights. A flight composed of two or more member flights which is identified by the airline designator and flight number of one of the members. Only one airline designator/flight number is operational on any one leg, but a leg may have multiple, non-operational flight numbers. Example: Legs AD, BD and CD are each members (with Leg DE) of funnel flights ADE, BDE and CDE. Legs AD and DE comprise Segment AE (ADE), and are identified by the member flight number DL 123. Legs BD and DE comprise Segment BE (BDE), and are identified by the member flight number DL 456. Legs CD and DE comprise Segment CE (CDE), and are identified by the member flight number DL 789. Leg DE is not identified by flight number DL 456 when it is not a member of Segment BE (BDE). Leg DE is not identified by flight number DL 789 when it is not a member of Segment CE (CDE). It continues to be identified as DL 123 when it is point-to-point from D to E. Note: A funnel flight may be built in either direction, from many legs into one segment (as in the above example), and/or from one leg into many segments.
- Funnel Flight Also known as Complexing, Starburst, W or Y FLIGHTS. A flight composed of two or more member flights which is identified by the Airline Designator and Flight Number of one of the members. Only one Airline Designator/Flight Number is operational on any one leg, but a leg may have multiple, non-operational Flight Numbers. * For further guidance, see also Appendix H: Duplicate Flight Legs.
- Function An invocation of an activity or purpose natural to or intended for a person or thing.
- Fueling Procedure A procedure for filling the complete set of tanks (All Tanks) of an aircraft or an individual fuel tank, which might be composite when multiple tanks have been combined under one.
- Fuel Tank A container holding the fuel supply in a motor vehicle, aircraft, etc.
- Fuel Effect Effect of fuel volume and/or weight on balance arm and/or index for a given fuel tank or fueling procedure.
- Fuel Distribution Step Element The quantity or ratio allocated to a specific tank or set of tanks during a fuel distribution step.
- Fuel Distribution Step A step in the fueling of an aircraft describing the quantities to distribute to each of the corresponding tanks.
- Fuel Distribution A procedure that defines the consecutive steps for fueling an aircraft and the quantities to distribute to each of the corresponding tanks at each step in case a fuel split calculation is required to be performed by the departure control system.
- French Gold Francs Francs consisting of 651.2 milligrams of gold with a fineness of nine hundred thousandths.
- Free Sale Agreement A bilateral or multilateral agreement between carriers or between carriers and CRSs which permits immediate confirmation of space in accordance with terms of agreement without the necessity of maintaining space availability information (see Resolution 766).
- Fourth Freedom The right for an air carrier to take on, in another State, passengers, freight and mail for off-loading in the State in which it is registered
- Forwarding Carrier The carrier responsible for the condition which creates a need for involuntary change in the passenger’s journey; on missed connections the carrier on whose flight a passenger is originally ticketed to be carried to a connection point is the forwarding carrier (see Resolution 735d).
- FOID Form of identification. Typically used to identify that the passenger is who he says he is. This is the type of FOID as defined in AIRIMP (FF Number, Credit Card Number, etc.).
- Floor Load Limitation Table Set of related floor load limitations.
- Floor Load Limitation Maximum load acceptable on any m2 (ft2) of an aircraft floor.
- Floating Pallet A unit load device (ULD), including its load, which is positioned outside any predefined pallet position, and is not secured by the pallet locking devices of the ULD restraint system, but is restrained to the aircraft structure by means of tie-down fittings and lashings.
- Flight Schedule The planned regularly operated flights of an airline.
- Flight Number The numerical designation of a flight (see Resolution 761).
- Flight Number A multi-purpose reference assigned by a carrier in connection with the planning and control of the operation of flights.
- Flight Interchange A flight that gives passengers the benefit of a through service and is operated by two or more carriers from the boarding point to the deplaning point using the same aircraft (see Resolution 766).
- Flight Deck Crew Location Seat location for flight deck crew.
- Flight Deck Crew Crew members whose duties require them to be on the flight deck.
- Flight Deck The cockpit of a large aircraft.
- Flight Coupon(s) That portion of a Ticket annotated “good for passage“ or a segment(s) of an Electronic Ticket.
- Flight Coupon The portion of the Passenger Ticket and Baggage Check or Excess Baggage Ticket that indicates particular places between which the coupon is good for carriage.
- Flight The operation of one or more legs with the same Flight Designator (airline code, flight number and optional operational suffix).
- Flight The movement of a passenger-carrying aircraft, serving two (single sector flight) or more (multi-sector flight) airports under one flight number of an airline, as published in the airlines schedules and reservations systems.
- Fleet Group of similar vehicles operating together under the same ownership.
- Flap A hinged or sliding section of an aircraft wing used to control lift.
- First Class Fare The fare established for a first class service.
- First Carrier The participating carrier over whose air routes the first section of carriage under the Ticket is undertaken or performed.
- First Boarding Point The point in a portion of an itinerary applicable to a given Member at which the passenger commences travel on the services of that Member. When the itinerary is changed, the term relates to the point at which the passenger commences travel on Members’ service in the revised routing, irrespective of the start point applicable to the original itinerary.
- Firming A procedure whereby a carrier at a boarding point contacts passengers holding definite reservations to ensure that they actually intend using this space (see IATA Resolution 766).
- Fictitious Point A Location Identifier reserved for the purpose of schedule construction to overcome day/date duplication and to describe legs with elapsed times greater than 23 hours 59 minutes.
- Fee Amount added on to a charge for a specific product, purpose, or service.
- Fares Tariff The tariff concerned with fares and related charges.
- Fare Proration Proration on the basis of the respective local fares.
- Fare Construction Points The terminal points of a fare component.
- Fare Component A portion of an itinerary between two consecutive fare construction points. If the journey has only one fare component, the points of origin and destination are the only fare construction points
- Fare Break Points (see “Fare Construction Points“)
- Fare The amount charged by the carrier for the carriage of a passenger and his allowable free baggage and is the current fare which a Member, in the publication it normally uses to publish fares, holds out to the public, or the appropriate segment of the public, as being applicable to the class of service to be furnished.
- Facility A space with equipment or piece of equipment that allows a process to take place. For example, this can be an airport, a hangar, a loading dock, a kiosk, a runway, etc.
- Exchange/ Reissue Transactions Exchange is defined the value of one document moved to another document, in accordance with the provisions of IATA Passenger Tariff Coordinating Conference Resolution 017f Section C1 “Voluntary Reroutings (for totally unused tickets)“. Reissue is defined as an issuance of a new ticket against a previously issued ticket, in accordance with the provisions of IATA Passenger Tariff Coordinating Conference Resolution 017f Section B “Voluntary Reroutings (for partly used pricing units)“ or Section C2.
- Exchange Order A document issued by a carrier or its agents requesting issue of an appropriate Passenger Ticket and Baggage Check or provision of services to the person named in such document (see Resolution 725).
- Excess Baggage Ticket A receipt issued by a carrier to a passenger(s) of excess baggage and/or valuation charges.
- Excess Baggage Charge A charge for the carriage of excess baggage.
- Exception Control A person or thing that is excluded from a general statement or does not follow a rule.
- Event A significant occurrence or happening related to a person, animal, object or process.
- Event A thing that happens, especially one of importance.
- Endorsement Written authority from a carrier to transfer an Accountable Traffic Document (Ticket, Miscellaneous Charges Order or Multiple Purpose Document), or individual coupon(s) thereof, to another carrier. Such written authority will normally be stamped in the “ENDORSEMENTS/ RESTRICTIONS“ box. Endorsements may also be effected using commercial or interline communications facilities (see IATA Resolution 736 and Recommended Practice 1736).
- End-On Combination Combination of pricing units at a fare construction point (except as provided in local combination?).
- En Route Between station of origin and station of destination.
- Email Address Identifies an email box to which email messages are delivered.
- Electronic Ticket Delivery Network A network of ATB delivery locations operated by an authorised third party contractor.
- Electronic Funds Transfer The electronic transfer of funds without any paper, normally to or from a bank account.
- Electronic Address A virtual address concerned with electronics, like email address, network address.
- Economy Fare The fare established for an economy/tourist class service.
- Duplicate Reservation A condition which arises when two or more reservations are made for the same passenger(s) when it is evident the passenger(s) will be able to use only one, except that a request to change an itinerary, whether or not it is so identified, shall not be considered a duplicate reservation.
- Duplicate Leg A single, non-operational, leg of a flight that, for commercial/technical reasons, is displayed under more than one Flight Number by the operating carrier, or is displayed by a different Airline Designator/Flight Number by an airline other than the operating carrier. For further guidance, see also Appendix H: Duplicate Flight Legs.
- Duplicate Leg A single non-operational leg that, for commercial/technical reasons, is displayed under more than one flight number by the operating carrier, or is displayed by a different airline designator/flight number by an airline other than the operating carrier.
- Dry Operating Index The center of gravity of the aircraft at its Dry Operating Weight expressed in index units (See index unit).
- Dry Operating Aircraft Aircraft configured according to a given Dry Operating Weight configuration.
- DOW Item Item that can be considered as part of the Dry Operating Weight buildup of an aircraft or aircraft group as per company specifications e.g. Basic Weight, Flight Deck Crew, Cabin Crew, Flight Deck Crew Baggage, Cabin Crew Baggage, Pantry, Containers, Pallets, Potable Water, Library, ... Other items are included in the total traffic load weight.
- DOW Configuration Identification of operational items such as crew, pantry, potable water and/or service weight adjustments and their weight and/or index influence that are included in the Dry Operating Weight of an aircraft or aircraft group.
- DOW Dry Operating Weight. Basic weight plus operational items, such as crew, crew baggage, flight equipment and pantry as per company specifications.
- Door A swinging or sliding barrier that will close the entrance to a room or building or vehicle.
- Domestic Transfer A change from the domestic service of one carrier to another domestic service of the same carrier (online transfer) or to the domestic service of another carrier (interline transfer)
- Domestic Flight Leg A flight between two stations to which the same ISO country code applies.
- Document Number The unique identification number of a traffic document as outlined in IATA Recommended Practice 1720a. The document number comprises the airline code, form code, serial number and in some cases, a check digit.
- Document A piece of written, printed, or electronic matter that provides information or evidence, or that serves as an official record. For example: Passenger Travel Document, Ticket.
- Distribution The process of distributing airline product offers across one or multiple channels.
- Discount Deduction from the price amount, made in advance of its payment.
- Disclosure Information which should be made known.
- Direct Route Fare The fare over the direct route between two points. When no direct route fare exists between two ticketed points, a fare must be established by combination over a ticketed point on the itinerary.
- Direct Route The shortest route operated between two points.
- Direct Route The shortest all year route operated by any Tariff Conference (TC) Member in both directions between ticketed points at which it exercises traffic rights; provided that 1) where a point is not served by any TC Member via the same route in both directions, the services of any non-TC Member, Associate Member and/or any scheduled non-IATA carrier shall be used, but only as the initial sector and/or the terminating sector 2) the services of any scheduled air carrier may be used a) over domestic sectors b) over sectors as provided in Resolution 011a 3) where a point is only served seasonally, the services of any scheduled air carrier may be used but only as initial or terminating sector provided further that any routing specified in Attachment ’A’ to Resolution 011 as a ’basic routing’ shall be deemed to be the direct route.

- Delivery Service The carriage of inbound consignments from the airport of destination to the address of the consignee or that of his designated agent or to the custody of the appropriate Government agency when required.
- Delivering Member The Member on whose flight a passenger is to be carried to an interline point or gap.
- Delivering Airline The airline over whose routes a passenger and his baggage are transported or are to be transported from the point of origin or stopover or a transfer going, to the next interline connection point.
- Delayed Baggage A piece(s) of baggage which fails to arrive at the airport of destination on the same flight as the passenger, but is subsequently delivered. (currently called “Baggage, Delay“ in Reso 780)
- Declared Value for Carriage The value of goods or baggage declared to the carrier by the passenger for the purposes of determining charges or of establishing the limit of the carrier’s liability for loss, damage or delay.
- Deck A structural floor level. For aircraft having one structural level only, this floor level shall be referred to as the main deck. For aircraft having more than one structural floor level, the different floor levels shall be referred to as “lower deck“, “main deck“ and “upper deck“, starting from bottom to top.
- Deadline Reservations - the minimum/maximum number of days/months before the day of departure by which reservations must be confirmed. Ticketing - the minimum/maximum number of days/months before the day of departure or the minimum/maximum number of hours/days after reservation by which payment and ticketing must be completed; issue date of a PTA constitutes the ticketing date. NOTES: 1. When ’deadline’ is used in paragraphs other than Reservations and Ticketing, the term refers to the deadline for reservations and ticketing. When different deadlines apply, it is necessary to specify which deadline (e.g. ’before ticketing deadline’) 2. ’Before deadline’ includes transactions made on the deadline date.
- Dead Load Index Index effect of the dead load (See index unit).
- Dead Load Baggage, cargo, mail , ballast and equipment in compartments not included in dry operating weight of the aircraft.
- Days Full calendar days, including Sundays and legal holidays (see IATA Resolution 735).
- Dated Operating Segment An operation between board point and any subsequent off point within the same flight designator. Could be one or more legs. Could also be used for other transport vehicles such as train or bus etc.
- Dated Operating Leg The nonstop operation of a transport vehicle between the departure station and the arrival station. Can be used for aircrafts as well as other transport vehicles such as train or bus etc.
- Dated Marketing Segment The commercial designation under which a Dated Operating Segment’s seats can be marketed and booked, either by the operating carrier or by a partner or code share carrier.
- Date of Transaction The date of issuance of the ticket, MCO or PTA
- Data Security The denial of unauthorised access to, or transmission of, electronic data.
- Data Integrity The transmission of electronic data as accepted, without alteration.
- Data A representation of facts, concepts or instructions in a formalised manner suitable for communication, interpretation or processing by human beings or by automatic means.
- Curtailment Table Set of Curtailments.
- Curtailment Limitation to certified (manufacturer’s) CG limits in order to account for certain operational assumptions and associated CG calculation inaccuracies.
- Currency of the Country of Payment The currency in which international fares from that country are denominated. Currency Codes referring ISO 4217.
- Currency Conversion The result of converting one currency into another currency. E.g. local currency to USD, air miles to monetary.
- Cumulative Load Limitation Table Set of related cumulative load limitations.
- Cumulative Load Limitation Maximum load acceptable forward or aft of a given location (station/balance arm or section).
- CRS Supplier Any entity and its affiliates that own in whole or in part a CRS.
- CRS Subscriber A person or entity other than an airline using a CRS under contract from a CRS Supplier for the sale of air transportation products and/or other related services.
- Crew Standard Weights Approved crew standard weights to be used for weight and balance calculation.
- Crew Distribution Element A specific allocation in a crew distribution.
- Crew Distribution Allocation of crew (flight deck and cabin crew) and their baggage to associated locations.
- Crew Baggage Standard Weights Approved crew baggage standard weights to be used for weight and balance calculation.
- Crew Baggage Baggage which is the property of operating crew and which is separately identified, excluding carry-on baggage.
- Crew A group of people who are assigned the role of work on and operate a ship, boat, aircraft, spacecraft, or train.
- Country Sub-Division An area of land which is a sub-division within a country, such as a state, a county, a canton, a province, a region, etc.
- Country of Unit Origin The country in which the unit origin is situated.
- Country of Payment The country where payment is made by the purchaser to the Tariff Conference (TC) Member or its Agent; payment by cheque, credit card or other banking instruments shall be deemed to have been made at the place where such instrument is accepted by the TC Member or its Agent.
- Country of Commencement of Transportation The country from which travel on the first international sector takes place
- Country A nation with its own government, occupying a particular territory.
- Corporate Organization A corporate company or group.
- Coordinator Natural or legal person with detailed knowledge of airline scheduling coordination, responsible for the allocation of slots at a fully coordinated airport.
- Control The power to influence or direct people’s behavior or the course of events.
- Continuing Itinerary All remaining segments or portions of itinerary beyond any designated point or gap.
- Container (see Unit Load Device)
- Container A structured unit confined by ceiling, floor walls, into which dead load is bulk loaded and designed to be locked on a position/bay as a unit. See also unit load device.
- Contact Load Limitation Maximum load acceptable in direct contact with the aircraft floor per m2 (ft2).
- Contact Information The electronic or geographic address which a party has provided as the contact channel. For example, contact email, contact postal address, contact phone number.
- Contact A party which may be approached for information or assistance
- Constructed Rate A rate, other than a specified rate.
- Constructed Fare Unspecified through fares created by 1) the use of add-ons 2) two fares shown as a single amount in a fare calculation and shown as “C/“
- Constructed Fare Unspecified through fares created by the use of add-ons or two fares shown as a single amount in a fare calculation and shown as “C/“.
- Constraint A limitation or restriction.
- Connection Time Constraint Minimum and/or maximum time constraints for travelers and baggage transfer to connect between transportation legs.
- Connection The ability to transfer passengers, baggage, cargo or mail from one flight to another within a reasonable time period. On-line connections concern transfers between flights of the same airline designator and interline connections between flights of different airline designators.
- Connecting Point A connecting point is an intermediate point in an itinerary at which the passenger deplanes from one flight and boards another flight either on the same airline, or at which he transfers from the flight of one airline to a flight of another airline for continuation of the journey
- Connecting Carrier A carrier to whose services the passenger and his baggage or the cargo are to be transferred for onward connecting transportation.
- Conjunction Ticket A ticket issued to a passenger concurrently with another ticket(s) which together constitute a single contract of carriage.
- Configuration Element A part or element of a configuration.
- Configuration (see “Aircraft Configuration“)
- Configuration An arrangement of parts or elements.
- Conditions of Carriage The terms and conditions established by a carrier in respect to its carriage.
- Computer Reservations System A computerized system containing information about schedules, availability, fares and related services, and through which reservations can be made and/or tickets issued, and which makes some or all of these facilities available to subscribers. The CRS is typically the same as a Global Distribution System (GDS).
- Computer Generated Document Number A document number that is computer generated and printed on the document at the time of issue. The airline code and form code may be preprinted, with the serial number being computer generated.
- Composite Flight A flight composed of two or more member flights of any type, but which is identified with an Airline Designator/Flight Number combination different from any of its member flights. For further guidance, see also Appendix H: Duplicate Flight Legs.
- Composite Flight A flight composed of two or more member flights of any type, but which is identified with an airline designator/flight number combination different from any of its member flights. - Compartment Load Limitation Maximum load acceptable in a compartment.
- Compartment A space designated within the aircraft for the carriage of passengers or deadload. Often the terms “cabin“ and “compartment“ are used interchangeably.
- Communication The imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium.
- Commission An amount of money, typically a set percentage of the value involved, paid to an agent in a commercial transaction.
- Commercial Item Good or service (but not real estate) sold or traded in the normal course of a firm’s business; or customarily used by the general public or offered to it for lease, license, or sale.
- Commercial Instrument A tool or resource related to commerce.
- Commercial Exchange Information related to giving one thing and receiving another (especially of the same type or value) in return, especially in a commerce environment.
- Commercial Duplicate Flight A flight where the operating airline allows seats/space to be sold by one or more other airlines and all participants to such an agreement sell their seats/space on that flight under their own Flight Designator. More than one Flight Designator is used for a single operating flight, including at least one with the Airline Designator of the operating airline, and at least one with the Airline Designator of a non-operating airline.
- Commercial Document Written record of certain aspects of a commercial transaction, such as an order, commercial invoice, shipping or transport document, certificate of origin.
- Commercial Communication Facilities Method used to communicate which includes mail, telegraph, TWX or Telex and long distance telephone.
- Commerce Role A type of party role which represents the business prospects of a company.
- Combined Load Limitation Table Set of related combined load limitations.
- Combined Load Limitation Maximum load acceptable for a combination of loading locations. Locations can include bays, pallet positions, holds, compartments on different decks.
- Combination of Rates An amount which is obtained by combining two or more rates.
- Combination of Fares An amount which is obtained by combining two or more fares.
- Combination of Charges An amount which is obtained by combining two or more charges.
- Combination Whenever two or more one-way or round trip or half round trip fares are used and shown separately in a fare calculation
- Code Sharing Flight A generic term referring to various types of operational and/or commercial arrangements between two or more airlines.
- Code Sharing Code sharing exists when: (a) one carrier operates a flight on behalf of another, using that carrier’s airline designator in the flight number, (b) two or more carriers jointly operate a flight under one or more airline designators.
- Cockpit That part of an aircraft from which the flight crew control the aircraft.
- Co-Host Airline An industry term used to specify an airline whose schedules and availability are stored on a preferential basis in the System of another airline. A co-host arrangement may include additional features.
- Clone PNR A PNR created by copying some or all of the data from an existing PNR in the same system.
- Clear Area The area clear of printing or marking which surrounds the characters to be optically scanned.
- Class Rate A rate applicable to a specifically designated class of goods.
- Class Segregation of passengers according to the fare paid or facilities and services offered.
- Claim Settling Airline The airline settling the claim with the passenger or other person acting on his/her behalf.
- Claim Receiving Airline A revenue participating/carrying airline who receives and processes the passenger’s written demand for compensation for lost, damaged or delayed baggage.
- Claim Participating Airline A revenue participating airline who shares in the settlement of a claim for the passenger’s checked baggage.
- Claim A written demand for compensation prepared and signed by or on behalf of the passenger in the case of baggage, containing an itemized list and value of goods for which compensation is being requested.
- City Pair (see “Segment“)
- City City (e.g. Dublin), town, or postal station (i.e. a postal service territory, often used in a military address, or metropolitan area).
- Citizenship The position or status of being a legally recognized subject or national of a particular country.
- Circle Trip - Special Fares Travel from a point and return thereto by a continuous, circuitous air route, comprising only two international fare components which do not meet the conditions of the round trip definition
- Circle Trip - Normal Fares Travel from a point and return thereto by a continuous, circuitous air route, including travel comprising two fare components but which do not meet the conditions of the round trip definition
- Circle Trip Travel from a point and return thereto by a continuous circuitous air route; provided that where no reasonably direct scheduled air service is available between two points, a break in the circle may be traveled by any other means of transportation without prejudice to the circle trip.
- Children’s Fare A fare for a person who has attained his second but not his twelfth birthday as of the date of commencement of travel.
- Child A person who has reached his/her second birthday but not his/her 12th birthday as of the date of commencement of travel.
- Checked Baggage Baggage of which the carrier takes sole custody and for which the carrier has issued a baggage check.
- Check-in Process The process involving those activities necessary to evaluate passengers and make them ready to board flights, possibly including : - verification of reservation status; - selection of seat if not already made and possibly other amenities; - capture of baggage details; - delivery of boarding pass; - verification of baggage allowance; - delivery of baggage tags; - entry of baggage details in passenger ticket; - evidence of acceptance of flight coupon; - update of load control data; - passenger and baggage through processing; - baggage acceptance; - regulatory travel document check. Check-in can be performed by humans or by machines (self-service devices such as kiosks).
- Check-in Desk A counter in an airport at which a passenger may check in.
- Check Digit A digit added to a given number to check the accuracy of the number. The modulus 7 check digit used with document numbers is the remainder of the division of the number to be checked by 7.
- Check A written order instructing a financial institution to pay immediately on demand a specified amount of money from the check writer’s account to the person named on the check or, if a specific person is not named, to whoever bears the check to the institution for payment.
- Charge An amount to be paid for carriage of excess baggage based on the applicable rate for such carriage; or an amount to be paid for a special or incidental service in connection with the carriage of a passenger or baggage.
- Change of Gauge en Route see “Change of Equipment En Route”
- Change Of Gauge A scheduled change of aircraft, irrespective of aircraft type, occurring one or more times en route. In flight operations, the change occurs under an Airline Designator and Flight Number between the station of origin and the station of final destination. In flight distribution, the change occurs within a passenger segment.
- Change of Equipment en Route A scheduled change of aircraft, occurring one or more times en route, but identified by one airline designator/flight number between the station of origin and the station of destination. Example: Delta Flight 107 travels from point A to point B to point C. There is a change of equipment at point B, from a 727 aircraft to an L1011 aircraft. Although passengers must physically change aircraft, their flight number remains the same (DL 107) throughout the journey. - Change of Equipment en Route A scheduled change of aircraft, occurring one or more times en route, but identified by one Airline Designator/Flight Number between the Station of origin and the Station of final destination. For further guidance, see SSIM manual Appendix H: Duplicate Flight Legs.
- Centroid The center of mass of a geometric object of uniform density.
- Center Of Gravity Limit Table Set of related Center of Gravity (CG) limits.
- Center Of Gravity Limit End point forward or aft of the range within which the center of gravity of an aircraft must lie for safe flight.
- Center Of Gravity The point at which an aircraft would balance if it were possible to suspend it at that point.
- Cash Any payment that is collected by the agent and settled between the Airline and the agent. Refer to IATA Resolution 728 Attachment A for full details.
- Carrying Member Any Member participating in transportation of passenger.
- Carrying Airline A party over whose routes a passenger and his baggage are transported or are to be transported.
- Carry-on Baggage (see “Unchecked Baggage“)
- Carrier The organization which carries the passenger, baggage, or goods, and/or commits to delivering the carriage as well as any related services such as issuance of ticket, creation of Order, etc.
- Carriage Medium Method used to convey or transport goods or passengers from one place to another. See list of media in RP1745, attachment A paragraph 3.2. E.g. Airline Van, Rail.
- Carriage Carriage of passengers and/or baggage by air, gratuitously or for hire.
- Cargo Ventilation Device Ventilation capability of the cargo hold.
- Cargo Heating Device Heating capability of the cargo hold.
- Cargo Any goods carried on an aircraft and covered by an air waybill.
- Cancellation Fee (see “Cancellation Charge“)
- Cancellation Charge The service charge made by reason of failure of a passenger to use reserved accommodation without having cancelled such accommodation prior to the latest appropriate time for cancellation specified by the carrier.
- Cancellation When a Member or CRS is required to cancel or change reservations (including waitlistings) on any segment of an itinerary it shall determine what disposition is to be made of the entire itinerary and shall promptly cancel all unwanted segments.
- Cached Flight Availability Cached availability is a database of saved availability on a Members. flights for a pre-designated length of time and/or degree of accuracy. This database is stored in an external entity’s system (e.g. GDS, online subscriber, direct connect provider, agency). A cache may be used in place of availability queries only when bilaterally agreed.
- Cabin Type Type of compartment of an aircraft, offering specific services (e.g. business class, economy).
- Cabin Section Division of the cabin into zones for the purpose of balance.
- Cabin Layout Planned utilization layout of aircraft cabin section/zone.
- Cabin Element A part of a cabin having some specific characteristics or function.
- Cabin Crew Location Seat location for cabin crew.
- Cabin Crew Crew members, other than flight deck crew.
- Cabin Component Non-seat related cabin feature or facility (e.g. lavatory, galley, closet, stowage, etc.)
- Cabin Compartment A physical aircraft compartment where passenger seats are installed, classified by a given Cabin Type.
- Cabin Column Column within a Cabin used to identify Seats and Cabin Components within a Row.
- Cabin Baggage Baggage of which the passenger retains custody (also known as “Hand“ and/or “Unchecked“).
- Cabin All areas of an aircraft where passenger seats are installed (also known as fitted interior).
- Business Days In the context of Airport Coordination/Advice Procedures, business days refers to business days in the country of the message originator.
- Business Class A class of service with seating standards which may be superior to those provided on premium economy/economy class but less liberal than standards provided in first class.
- Bull’s Eye The character used in conjunction with an OCR document number on audit coupons to identify the 13-digit numbering scheme as opposed to the 12-digit scheme.
- Bulkhead A rigid partition.
- Bulk Load Any loose or non-containerized load.
- Building A permanent fixed structure, such as a house, factory, hotel, or office building.
- Budget Fare Special economy restricted fare
- BTIC (see “Baggage Tag Issuer Code“)
- Booking Reference Information related to a booking or reservation.
- Booking or Reservation A record, either in paper form or in electronic form, of the accommodation held by a passenger on a given flight.
- Booking Member The Member with which the passenger made his original reservations or with which additional reservations were made after commencement of the journey. Where a booking is made with, or through, or is handed over to a CRS, the CRS will be considered as the “Booking Member“.

- Booking An arrangement whereby something, especially a seat, room, or space is booked or reserved.
- Boarding Status The situation at a particular time during the boarding process of an individual party, such as not checked in, checked in, stand by, or boarded.
- Boarding Point The point at which a passenger is scheduled to embark on a flight of the boarding Member.
- Boarding Member The Member on whose flight a passenger is to be carried from a boarding point.
- Boarding Gate An exit/entry from an airport building to an aircraft or train or bus. Could for example be a boarding gate, arrival gate, departing gate, etc.
- Birthdate The date on which an individual party was born.
- Billing and Settlement Plan Method of providing and issuing traffic documents and of accounting and settling accounts between airlines and Travel Agents.
- Berth Sleeping accommodation as one of the following: (a) a permanent, built-in, full length bunk; or (b) sleeping accommodation converted from normal day time sitting accommodation which for each berth either requires more than one seat or renders more than one seat unusable.
- Bay Grouping A grouping of ULD positions (Stack/String) used as a method of maximizing the ULD capacity of a lower hold by not using intermediate locks.
- Basic Weight The Basic Empty Weight or Fleet Empty Weight of an aircraft or aircraft group. Includes all fixed equipment, system fluids, unusable fuel and configuration equipment including galley structure.
- Basic Schedule The planned regularly operated flights of an airline.
- Basic Index A numerical expression of the center of gravity of the aircraft at its basic weight expressed in index units (See index unit).
- Bankers Selling Rate The rate at which, for the purpose of the transfer of funds through banking channels (i.e. other than transactions in bank notes, travellers cheques and similar banking instruments), a bank will sell a given amount of foreign currency in exchange for one unit (or units) of the national currency of the country in which the exchange transaction takes place
- Bankers Buying Rate The rate at which, for the purpose of the transfer of funds through banking channels (i.e. other than transactions in bank notes, travelers cheques and similar banking instruments), a bank will purchase a given amount of foreign currency in exchange for one unit (or units) of the national currency of the country in which the exchange transaction takes place
- Bank Account Bank Account payment method definition. Customer bank accounts for payments, either for paper checks or electronic funds transfer.
- Ballast Dead load weight carried to achieve a particular balance condition.
- Balance Output Requirement Requirement to put specific balance information on specific types of load sheet (provisional, final, ACARS,...).
- Balance Limits The end points forward and aft of the range within which the center of gravity of an aircraft must lie for safe flight.
- Balance Limitation Limitation of an aircraft usually defined by the manufacturer in order to ensure proper balance conditions for safe flight.
- Balance Condition Numeric expression of the position of the center of gravity.
- Balance Arm Horizontal distance in length units from reference datum to the location.
- Baggage Tag Issuer Code This code combined with the tag serial number are used to identify each piece of checked luggage through all baggage handling processes. It is a three numeric identifier assigned by IATA. The code is generally referred to as the BTIC.
- Baggage Standard Weights Approved baggage standard weights to be used for weight and balance calculation.
- Baggage Process A baggage process, such as departures, transferring or terminating baggage process. Refer to business architecture.
- Baggage Irregularity A baggage process that is irregular in form or nature.
- Baggage Function A function applied to a bag such as movement, sortation, containerization or security.
- Baggage Exception A bag that is excluded from a general statement or does not follow a rule. E.g. a bag that is too heavy for normal process.
- Baggage Damage Physical damage to baggage and/or its contents.
- Baggage Claim Infrastructure facility and space allocated for retrieval of baggage.
- Baggage Allowance The amount of checked or carry-on luggage the airline will allow per passenger.
- Baggage Equivalent to the term “Luggage“, means such articles, effects, and other personal property of a passenger as are necessary or appropriate for wear, use, comfort, or convenience in connection with his trip. Unless otherwise specified, it includes both checked and unchecked baggage.
- Baggage As defined in applicable tariffs, of a passenger, carried in connection with the trip for which the passenger has purchased a ticket and which has been checked in accordance with applicable tariffs.
- Bag Tag A label document issued by a carrier solely for identification of checked baggage, the baggage (strap) tag portion of which is attached by the carrier to a particular article of checked baggage, and the baggage (identification) tag portion of which is given to the passenger.
- Bag Segment The movement of a bag over a Dated Operating Segment.
- Bag Activity The condition in which things are happening or being done to a bag, such as “scan a bag“.
- Bag A piece of luggage associated with a passenger, packed for traveling, and necessary or appropriate in connection with a journey.
- Auxiliary Service Operator A term used to designate a vendor who provides desired services and/or accommodations needed by the passenger in conjunction with airline space, e.g., car and hotel.
- Automated Ticket / Boarding Pass The form of automated ticket and boarding pass described in Resolutions 722c and 722d. It is a single copy non-carbonised ticket (normally on card stock) with each coupon imprinted separately. Each coupon used for air transport is comprised of a flight coupon and a detachable passenger coupon and boarding pass for a specific flight. One coupon is issued as the passenger receipt which together with all passenger coupons and boarding passes builds up the passenger copy of the passenger ticket and baggage check.
- Asymmetrical Load Limitation Table Set of related asymmetrical load limitations.
- Asymmetrical Load Limitation Maximum load acceptable on each side of the compartment floor in relation with each other.
- Assembly Point A point in the travel itinerary where an entire qualifying group of passengers assemble and commence transportation as a group.
- ARNK Arrival unknown or via means other than scheduled air service. Used in reservations to fill a gap in the itinerary.
- Area Load Limitation See floor load limitation.
- Area The extent or measurement of a surface or piece of land, or a space allocated for a specific use. E.g. Check-in area, or security area at an airport.

- Applicable Fare For fare construction purposes, a fare which is established after the application of all fare construction calculations, e.g. excess mileage fare, higher intermediate fare but excluding related charges e.g. amounts to be annotated with “S“ or “Q“
- APEX Advance Purchase Excursion Fares
- Altitude The vertical distance of a level, a point, or an object considered as a point, measured from mean sea level (MSL).
- Alternative Reservation A definite reservation covering space on flight other than one originally preferred by passenger.
- Alliance Two or more airlines participating in a commercial relationship or joint venture, where a joint and commonly identifiable product is marketed under a single commercial name or brand.
- All-Cargo Aircraft A version of an aircraft type which carries cargo and mail only.
- Airway Schedule Information about schedules for movements involving change in the position or location of aircrafts in the air.
- Airports Council International The only global trade representative of the world’s airports.
- Airport Handling Manual The source for the latest industry-approved policies and standards covering all facets of safe and efficient airport operations.
- Airlines Reporting Corporation A company which provides ticket transaction settlement services between airlines and travel agencies (both traditional and online) and the travel management companies that sell their products in the United States.
- Airline Tariff Publishing Company A commercial company dealing in the collection and distribution of fares and fare-related data for the airline and travel industry.
- Airline Prefix The first three digits of a cargo traffic document number, e.g., airway bill. This identifies the document as being issued by or on behalf of an airline. This code is assigned by IATA.
- Airline Load Information Information distinguishing different categories of cargo used for load planning characterized by Airline specific codes in addition to codes defined in AHM510.
- Airline Code (see “Airline Designator“)
- Airline Accounting Code It is used as the first three digits of a passenger traffic document, e.g., ticket. This identifies the document as being issued by or on behalf of an airline or non-airline company other than a CRS. This code is assigned by IATA.
- Airline An enterprise operating aircrafts for commercial purposes which (i) performs scheduled or non-scheduled air transport services, or both, which are available to the public for carriage of passengers, mail and/or cargo and (ii) is certified for such purposes by the civil aviation authority of the state in which it is established.
- AIRIMP The A4A/IATA Reservations Interline Message Procedures. It is the mandatory multilateral data exchange standard for interline communications for passenger reservations. A guide to teletype messages formats and rules that govern transmission circumstances for reservation type functions.
- Aircraft Registration The complete alphanumeric identification assigned by the appropriate licensing authority to an individual aircraft. Hyphens contained within the registration shall not be included. E.g. GBOAC, N46573, ZZ123.
- Aircraft Payload The weight of passengers, baggage, cargo and mail and includes both revenue and non-revenue items.
- Aircraft Parking Position Gate or hard stand where an aircraft may park.
- Aircraft Limitation Set Set of related limitations of an aircraft usually defined by the manufacturer in order to avoid overstressing the aircraft (structural load limitation) and to ensure proper balance conditions for safe flight (balance limitation).
- Aircraft Group Configuration Specific Configuration of an Aircraft Group.
- Aircraft Group Group of aircraft operating together under the same ownership, belonging to the same aircraft type and having a set of configuration data in common.
- Aircraft Configuration Planned utilization layout of aircraft interior space.
- Aircraft Bay A subdivision of a containerized/palletized compartment, i.e. ULD Load position
- Aircraft A transport vehicle which is certified as airworthy by a competent aeronautical authority.
- Air Operator’s Certificate The approval granted from the National Airworthiness Authority (NAA) to an aircraft operator to allow them to use their aircraft for commercial purposes (payment or reward).

- Agent Role of an individual person to be a staff of an agency.
- Agency An organization which acts on behalf of another.

- Advance Seat Reservation Term used for a process that allows a specific seat to be booked in advance of departure, e.g., when the reservation was originally booked.
- Advance Passenger Information Passenger data which must be collected by airlines and communicated to the destination/transit country authorities.
- Adult Fare The fare for a person who has attained his twelfth birthday.
- Adult For Tariff purposes, a person who has reached his/her 12th birthday as of the date of commencement of travel
- Administrating Carrier The airline that has the financial and commercial responsibility of a flight and that may or may not be the Operating Carrier.
- Ad Hoc Schedule A variation, addition or cancellation from the basic schedule of one or more flights on single dates.
- Activity The condition in which things are happening or being done.

- Accountable Document A validated official document (such as an airline ticket, check, or payment voucher) that has a monetary value and must be accounted for. Examples in IATA standards include “Accountable Traffic Documents” listed in Resolution 781 (electronic ticket, EMD, etc.). Further classification of “Accountable Documents” is given in RP 1720a.
- Account An arrangement by which a body holds funds on behalf of a client.
- Accompanied When used for children and infant fares, this shall mean the child/infant must be accompanied by an adult paying an applicable adult fare or traveling at industry free or reduced fare tickets
- ACARS Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System. A digital datalink system for transmission of short, relatively simple messages between aircraft and ground stations.
- A La Carte Offer Item Contains one Service (excluding flights) or Service Bundle which is priced per unit. A La Carte Offer Items are optional, and the quantities of these can be selected for any of the eligible passengers and segments. #EndOfDef# These are offer items within a standalone Offer supplementing regular offers with ancillaries for the same passengers and segments. This enhances the shopping basket concept. The main purpose of this structure is to reduce the size of the message by proposing Offer Items which are applicable to multiple flight-related Offers defined above.
